National Volunteer Week 2021

National Volunteer Week 2021

National Volunteer’s Week (May 17-23) celebrates the significant contribution of Australia’s volunteers. During this week, organisations including libraries will recognise, celebrate and thank volunteers for the vital role they play in our community. Across Australia, it is estimated that nearly 6 million (5.897 million) people volunteer each year. That’s almost 1 in 3 people aged 15 years and over that commit their free time to a variety of organisations.

Volunteers help make library services even better by extending the service provided to our communities. They do all sorts of things from joining Friends Groups that help with fundraising and host special events to delivering books for people who can’t visit libraries.

Friends of the Library groups are volunteers that support libraries in their communities. These groups do many different things including promotion, fundraising and advocacy for the library service. Our Friends of the library groups play a significant role in supporting libraries and we thank them for their continuing efforts. West Gippsland Libraries currently has 5 established Friends Groups that include Friends of the Inverloch Library (FOIL), Friends of the Leongatha Library, Friends of the Phillip Island Library, Friends of Corner Inlet Libraries and Friends of Mirboo North Library. Expressions of interest for a Friends of the Waterline Library group are currently open, please register your interest at your local library or enquire online.

For more information about volunteer opportunities please see volunteering at the library.

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer or find out more about Friends Groups, contact your local library or enquire online to find out more.
